Case Study — Molded Rubber & Plastics
Client:
MRP Molded Rubber & Plastics
Market:
Medical Device Manufacturing, Healthcare Product Development
Challenge/Project:
To create and prove feasibility of manufacturing a two-part small low profile anchor port for laparoscopy surgery - glass filled nylon mated with silicone - with .02 separation between the two parts.
Process/Solution:
Mold a .020 thin wall tube with 30% glass filled nylon and then over mold the tube with LSR Silicone. The silicone over mold keeping only .02 away from the nylon tube with bond of the silicone at one end.
Prove product idea is feasible with prototype / bridge tooling for .02 wall nylon tube, and another for accordion-like shape of the over molded LSR cover to bond over the nylon tube.
Outcome:
Manufacturing/Process - Development proved successful and went onto production and is now common in the market place.
Market - Enables doctors to insert tube into body and anchor without slippage or seepage, which expedites the procedure and fosters patient recovery by leaving a smaller hole and expediting healing.
